In May we announced SamKnows as our independent testing partner for our enhanced broadband monitoring programme. The programme is designed to help consumers choose the best broadband for their homes.

Whiteboxes, which measure in-home broadband performance, have now been shipped to more than 800 volunteers around the country.

We are aiming to have a benchmark report with the first round of performance information out later this year. Following this, we will be holding a workshop with retail service providers to discuss the report and programme in more detail.

We have also recently published more technical FAQs on our website for those who want to understand the testing methodology.

We hope to have all 3,000 whiteboxes online and reported against in 2019. This sample size will allow consumers to compare plans, providers and technologies in both rural and urban areas.

We are also working with a range of stakeholders to ensure we can get the information out to as many consumers as possible.

We still need more volunteers

We have had a great response to our call for volunteers, with more than 3,600 signed up.

We have had many volunteers from Auckland, and we are now looking for more volunteers in the rest of New Zealand – particularly Wellington and Christchurch.

We are also looking for more volunteers on:

  • Fibre max and cable max plans for all providers
  • Fibre 100 plans for MyRepublic, Slingshot, Orcon, and Trustpower
  • Fixed wireless for Skinny, and Vodafone
  • ADSL and VDSL for 2 degrees, Trustpower, Orcon, and Slingshot
