The Commerce Commission’s Competition Matters conference is back for 2021, with a great line up of local and international speakers covering topics in the competition, economic regulation and consumer protection areas.

We are currently experiencing unprecedented change to how we work and interact, much of which has been accelerated by the COVID-19 pandemic. The Conference will bring members of the New Zealand Competition and Regulatory community together to discuss the ever-changing environment that we find ourselves in.

Conference sessions will cover a range of topics including how competition can both mitigate the harm and maximise the opportunities arising from disruptive events, how businesses and the Commission have navigated consumer laws to align with changing consumer behaviour, the role of regulators in encouraging digital inclusion, and the role of competition and regulation in creating and maintaining New Zealand’s infrastructure.

The Conference will also look at how the nature of the Commission’s work is changing and evolving, with panels considering the first two years of market studies, cartel criminalisation, and the changing credit/consumer environment. Anna Rawlings, Chair of the Commerce Commission, and Rod Sims, Chair of the Australian Competition and Consumer Commission, will discuss some of the issues confronting regulators in rapidly changing and uncertain times.

We will also be hosting a conference dinner to give you a chance to mix with other delegates.

If you are unable to attend in person, the conference will be held as a hybrid event so that delegates can attend virtually. Our online platform will allow virtual delegates to interact live with speakers, participate in polls and network online during breaks in the programme.

Parking

Intercontinental Hotel offer valet parking at $40.00 per day.

Alternatively, there is a carpark managed by Wilson Parking NZ available under the hotel at your own cost,1.9metre height restriction. The prices are Monday-Friday $45 per 12 hour period. Saturday and Sunday is $12 per 12 hour period.

The conference dinner will be held on day 1 of the conference in Intercontinental Hotel.

A three course meal will be served. This dinner is a great opportunity to network with conference speakers and other delegates.

Dinner tickets are an additional cost of $130 per person and can be purchased during registration.

Ticket price includes GST and is in New Zealand dollars.

Block bookings have been made at the following hotels close to the Meeting venue. Special rates (GST inclusive) have been negotiated. Room rates do not include breakfast unless otherwise specified.

Early access

If you have an early morning arrival and require an early check-in, you will need to reserve your room for the previous night.

The conference programme includes the following keynote speakers:

  • Amelia Fletcher CBE, Board member of the United Kingdom’s Competition and Markets Authority and Professor of Competition Policy, University of East Anglia
  • Sharon Darcy, Director of Sustainability First based in the United Kingdom.

Other speakers will include Commissioners and Commission staff, together with international and local guests from government agencies, businesses and consumer communities. The programme will provide plenty of opportunities to question and talk with these speakers, as well as experts and local practitioners on competition, consumer and regulation matters.
