The Commerce Commission is continuing to monitor discussions between Air New Zealand and other parties which might lead to Air New Zealand acquiring an interest in Ansett Australia.

Obviously such an acquisition would have implications for domestic air services in New Zealand given Ansett Australia's involvement through Ansett New Zealand.

The Commission has previously had discussions with representatives of Air New Zealand and a range of other parties about such issues.

If Air New Zealand were to acquire an interest in Ansett Australia, the Commission anticipates receiving an application for authorisation under s.67 of the Commerce Act. Such an application would enable a full assessment of the effect on competition of any acquisition and, if necessary, consideration of any public benefits which might flow from the acquisition.

The Commission will continue to monitor this issue.
