The Commerce Commission has cleared Aspak Foods Ltd to acquire the Abels' industrial fats and oils business, a division of Unilever NZ Ltd.

Aspak and Abels are manufacturers and distributors of various industrial fats and oils in New Zealand.

Unilever NZ Ltd will continue to market its retail brands of margarine.

Commission Deputy Chairman Peter Allport said that the Commission had examined the likely competitive effects of the proposal in a number of markets relating to the manufacture and supply of white and yellow industrial fats and oil products.

It concluded that the proposal would not result in the acquisition or strengthening of dominance in these markets. Competition would continue to be provided by one other significant local competitor as well as from imports, said Mr Allport.
