The Commerce Commission has received an application from Southern Cross Health Trust and from QE Health Hospital Limited seeking clearance to merge their respective private hospital operations in Rotorua.

Southern Cross operates a number of private surgical facilities throughout the country including a hospital in Rotorua. The Southern Cross hospital in Rotorua has two operating theatres and 26 in-patient beds and provides secondary elective surgical services to both day patients and in-patients.

QE Health is a private surgical hospital in Rotorua with one operating theatre and 21 in-patient beds. QE Health also provides secondary elective surgical services to day patients and in-patients with a particular focus on the treatment of rheumatism and arthritis. QE Health also operates a therapeutic spa and a range of thermal treatment services.

In considering the application, the Commission's role is to determine whether the acquisition has the effect of substantially lessening competition in a market.
