The Commerce Commission has released its September quarterly monitoring report containing key statistics about telecommunications markets in New Zealand and overseas.

Recent amendments to the Telecommunications Act have empowered the Commerce Commission to monitor competition in telecommunications markets and their performance and development. This report is the Commission's fourth quarterly report and builds on the previous three.

New Zealand's ranking in all of the mobile baskets has improved this quarter, due to Vodafone lowering the price of its Base plans. However, all the unavoidable restrictive conditions of the Base plans are still in place.

The Commission will publish an annual report in early 2008 with a more detailed analysis of the state of telecommunication markets in New Zealand. From time to time the Commission will also publish reports focusing on particular aspects of telecommunications markets.

The September quarter report is available on the Commission's website: www.comcom.govt.nz, under Telecommunications Market Reports.
