The Commerce Commission has cleared Wilson and Horton Limited, publisher of the New Zealand Herald, to increase its shareholding in Northern Publishing Company Limited from 19.9 percent to 100 percent.

Northern Publishing produces the Northern Advocate, a daily newspaper circulated in Northland, and Whangarei Report, a weekly community newspaper.

Commission Chairman Dr Alan Bollard said that the Commission concluded the proposed increase in shareholding would not create or increase dominance because advertisers have alternatives, including community and other newspapers, advertising flyers and radio.

For news and information, other newspapers and several community newspapers circulate in various parts of Northland, and national Sunday and weekly newspapers are available.
