Airways Corporation of New Zealand Limited has withdrawn its application for authorisation of arrangements which would delay the introduction of competition for air traffic control services.

The Commerce Commission received written notification from Airways of the withdrawal of the application this morning.

Commission Deputy Chairman Peter Allport said the authorisation procedure has now been halted. The 66 interested parties are being notified of the cancellation of the conference, which was scheduled for March 11-13.

Airways' application was registered by the Commission on November 18 last year. The Commission released a draft determination on February 4 stating that, on the information currently available to it, it would not authorise arrangements which would allow Airways to delay the introduction of competition for air traffic control services.

A final decision was due by the end of March, but will now no longer be issued.

The Commission will continue its investigation into alleged breaches of the Act in relation to Airways pricing system which allows cross subsidisation from air traffic control services over which Airways has a statutory monopoly to services which are contestable.
