Clearance sought for Taranaki radiology joint venture
Published24 Feb 1999
The Commerce Commission today received an application for clearance of a proposal to combine Taranaki Healthcare Limited's and Fulford Radiology Limited's radiology services into one provider, a joint venture to be known as Fulford Radiology Services Limited (FRSL).
Commission Chairman Peter Allport said that FRSL has sought clearance to acquire radiology assets from both Taranaki Healthcare and Fulford Radiology. FRSL would then provide both public and private radiology services in the Taranaki region.
Taranaki Healthcare runs Taranaki Base Hospital and provides a wide range of public health services, including radiology. Fulford Radiology is a business owned by a group of radiologists and provides radiology services predominantly for private patients.
Mr Allport said that the Commission expects to make its decision by Wednesday March 10.
Background
The Commerce Act prohibits business acquisitions that result in dominance being acquired or strengthened in any markets. Parties can apply for a clearance, which will be granted if the Commission is satisfied that dominance is not acquired or strengthened.
A clearance, if granted, protects an acquisition from court action under the Act.
Copies of the application made by Taranaki Healthcare on behalf of FRSL are available from reception at the Commission's Wellington office, level 7 Landcorp House, 101 Lambton Quay.
