The Commerce Commission has appointed Terry Stapleton to act as its Deputy Chairman until June 30 when his second term as a Commissioner ends. Mr Stapleton is not seeking reappointment for a third term and is then returning to full time legal practice.

Mr Stapleton fills a vacancy left by Peter Allport who was last week appointed Commission Chairman. Mr Stapleton will also be the Commission's spokesperson on energy issues.

The Minister of Commerce is seeking expressions of interest for the positions of Deputy Chairman and Commissioners to be effective from July 1.

Mr Stapleton (46) is a Wellington lawyer. He was the Crown Solicitor at Gisborne from 1979 to 1987. He has practised in Wellington since 1988 and is a partner in the firm of Stapleton Stevens.

Mr Stapleton specialises in commercial and litigation work. He is a Fellow of both the Chartered Institute of Arbitrators (UK) and the Arbitrators' and Mediators' Institute of New Zealand. He is a member of the Institute of Directors in New Zealand and a director of Macraes Mining Company Limited. He has been a Commissioner since 1993.
