The Commerce Commission today published on its website a document outlining its role within the Dairy Industry Restructuring Act 2001.

The 24 page publication, called Compliance, explains the Commission's roles and responsibilities under the new Act, and its approach to meeting them.

"The Commission recognises the significant role the dairy industry has within New Zealand and its economy," said Commission Acting Chair, Paula Rebstock.

"The Commission's approaches will be drawn from its experience with its other investigation and adjudication responsibilities, following its normal processes and principals."

The Commission consulted with the Ministry of Agriculture and Forestry, the Ministry of Economic Development, Fonterra and the Shareholders' Council in the preparation of Compliance.

In addition to being available on the website, Compliance is currently being printed and will be distributed next week.

"This issue of Compliance is the largest direct distribution in its six year history. The 18,500 farmers and sharemilkers on Fonterra's database will personally receive a copy of Compliance next week," added Ms Rebstock.

The electronic "pdf" file is available today and can be downloaded from the Commission's website..
