A Wellington shoe shop, Ashley Ardrey, has been fined $1,000 for selling Franco Burrone shoes with no country of origin labels despite an earlier warning from the Commerce Commission.

While the brand name sounds Italian, and some customers may have believed the shoes were European, they were made in Australia.

All shoes and clothing must have correct country of origin labels. Other goods do not have to have country of origin labels but if they do, the labels must be correct.

In November last Ashley Ardrey sold Franco Burrone shoes for $299 a pair. They had no country of origin labels.

The shops owners, Jenny and Arthur Harrison, were warned that all shoes must have correct labels.

In January this year an investigator bought a pair of Franco Burrone shoes from the shop. They were again unlabelled.

Commission Chairman Dr Alan Bollard said the Commission makes considerable effort to educate businesses about the requirements of the law but if they ignore advice or warnings the Commission will prosecute them.
