The Commerce Commission expects to make a decision on Kiwi Cooperative Dairies Limited application for clearance of its bid for Tui Milk Products Limited by August 16.
Commission Chairman Dr Alan Bollard said Kiwi applied to the Commission on Friday last week for clearance to acquire all of Tui's assets.
Dr Bollard said the Commerce Act prohibits business acquisitions that result in dominance being acquired or strengthened in any market.
The Commission will grant a clearance if it is satisfied that dominance is not acquired or strengthened.
If granted, a clearance protects the acquisition from court action under the Commerce Act.
