Number portability enables a customer to switch telecommunications providers while keeping the same phone number.
Local and mobile number portability (LMNP) are both regulated under the Telecommunications Act. The previous December 2016 determination expired in December 2021.
In July 2021 we initiated the process for making a new determination and decided there are reasonable grounds to commence an investigation into issuing a new determination for the LMNP services under section 39 of the Act.
On 2 December we published our Local and Mobile Number Portability (LMNP) Determination 2021.
The new Determination [2021] largely carries over the regulatory settings from the previous Determination set in 2016, including the cost allocation formula and terms that parties to the Determination must follow.
However, the Determination also includes a new Fraud and Security protection section in the General Business Rules section of the Local and Mobile Number Portability Terms and amends the Bilateral and other Agreements section to help facilitate the prevention of fraud in number porting.
The Determination [2021] came into force on 20 December 2021.
