Wellington International Airport is New Zealand's third busiest airport. It usually caters to about 6.4 million passengers a year from 9 airlines to 25 direct destinations (2019 figures, the last full year pre-Covid).
To date we have focused our reviews of Wellington Airports' performance on the pricing events that occur at least every 5 years.
We focussed our analysis of Wellington Airport’s third price setting event on promoting greater understanding about changes in Wellington Airport’s expected profitability. This was because the primary change introduced by Wellington Airport for PSE3 was a reduction in charges.
We provided analysis of Wellington Airport’s second price setting event in our report to Ministers. This report was a one-off requirement under section 56G of the Commerce Act and was required as soon as practicable after any new price was set in or after 2012. The report considered whether information disclosure regulation had been effective and found it was not effective for limiting excessive profits for Wellington Airport.
